Key Skills remain an integral part of GNVQs although achievement of a GNVQ is no longer dependent on them as they are separately certificated. The revised Key Skills units are signposted within the vocational units and support Key Skills achievement. Chalkface worksheets use naturally occurring opportunities in study to develop key skills during teaching, learning and assessment.

LESSONS
THIS IS ME This page aims to make students focus on their skills and qualities, and their suitability for careers in health and social care. Students use this information to introduce themselves to others, and then draw up personal 'portraits' using images supported by text.
GETTING TO KNOW YOU This page asks students to share ideas about the best way to elicit information from clients. Vocationally, the page is linked with work experience or visits to organisations in the community. Students will need to find ways of relating to others in order to exchange ideas.
CAREER TALK This page asks students to share knowledge about careers in health and social care. Students are asked to discuss a variety of careers and examine their suitability for each before producing a leaflet on an area of interest
APPLICATION FORM This page aims to develop skills in presenting information clearly where space is restricted (in pre-set formats), and to give students the opportunity to complete a sample job application form. Students are asked to identify duties of jobs in health and social care.
IMPORTANT LETTER This page is intended to encourage students to use standard conventions in letter format. Students are asked to rewrite a letter using basic rules, and correcting spelling, punctuation, grammar and layout.
FACT FINDING This worksheet asks students to pool ideas about fact finding and then to carry out a research project. Students identify the needs of three different client groups and use a variety of research sources to compile an information booklet.
USING IMAGES This page is designed to help students convey information to others. Students are asked to suggest images that may be suitable to convey information to a number of different client groups.
PERSONAL HEALTH This page is designed to help students give information to others and to promote discussion about a health topic. Students are asked to identify the components of a healthy lifestyle before giving a talk on the subject to a group, inviting discussion.
HEALTH FACTS This page is designed to help students convey information to others. Students are asked to suggest images that may be suitable to convey information to one client group.
KEEPING A RECORD This page is designed to focus student attention on the need for accuracy and legibility when recording information. Students initially study record cards and identify situations in which they will be used. A general discussion then follows about the possible consequences of filling out cards inaccurately.
THE REPORT This page highlights the need for knowledge of client background, accuracy of information and the correct use of conventions when completing reports.
ARRANGING A VISIT This page involves students arranging a visit to sheltered accommodation. They are asked to write a letter and a memo, and to draw up a questionnaire.
CARE JARGON This page looks at some technical terms used in health and social care settings. Students discuss the contents of a fax printout, translating technical terms before drawing up a dictionary of terms.
ACTION PLANNING This page is designed to develop skill in identifying and prioritising tasks when planning care or carrying out assignment work. Students are asked to draw up an appropriate care plan for a client from the information given.
CASE CONFERENCE This page is designed to raise students' awareness of the importance of being able to summarise clearly and concisely. Students are asked to summarise their views in a mock case conference.
LIFE STAGES This page asks students to consider how the use of images aids understanding of text and conveys information. Students are asked to discuss ways in which the image of a child enhances understanding of child development.
FIRST AID FACTS This page is designed to help students give straightforward information to another student about the techniques used in basic life saving. Students are asked to instruct one another on how to open an airway, perform cardiac massage and place a casualty in the recovery position, and to check that their instructions have been understood.
INSTRUCTING OTHERS This page offers students the opportunity to practise giving instructions. They are asked to identify the information the emergency services would require about an accident, and then instruct a partner on how to phone the emergency services and what to say.
IMPORTANT FACTS This page aims to help students to extract important information from given material. Students study a picture of an accident scene and are then asked to summarise the situation, giving information on an accident report form.
STATISTICS AND SURVEYS This page highlights the ways in which pie charts, graphs and other images can be used to convey information in the context of a presentation. Students are encouraged to discuss how communication through images differs from written material.
